About the Calculator

The inflation calculator uses annual consumer price index (CPI) data for St. John’s from 1952 to 2016 to show changes in the cost of a typical basket of consumer purchases. These include food, shelter, furniture, clothing, transportation and recreation.

A "basket" of goods and services that cost:   $ in
...would cost:   $ in
Per cent change: %
Number of Years:

* This inflation calculator has been adapted from the Bank of Canada inflation calculator.

Users should note that data from 1971 to 2016 is Statistics Canada's current CPI series for St. John's. The data from 1952 to 1970 is based on an earlier Statistics Canada CPI series and has been adjusted by Economic Research and Analysis to provide one series covering 65 years. As a result, the series from 1952 to 1970 is not entirely consistent with the later series and has been provided to give users some limited indication of how inflation has progressed over this period.
